Criterium Races in KOMRIDER: Where Every Lap Counts

Few race formats are as uncompromising as the criterium. A short, fast circuit, lots of laps, constant fighting for position, and a sprint at the end that decides everything. No long stretches of rolling, no chance to catch your breath – drop off the back of the pack and you rarely make it back. That is exactly the feeling KOMRIDER brings to your smart trainer.

What makes a criterium special

In real road racing, a criterium is a race on a short, closed circuit – often right in the heart of a city. The laps are fast, the gaps are small, and because you ride the same course over and over, every corner and every acceleration matters. It is less about climbs and hours-long endurance, and more about punch, positioning, and nerve.

In KOMRIDER, this is the circuit race – as opposed to the classic point-to-point road race. And it feels exactly like that.

How a race begins

Criterium races run on a fixed schedule – hourly, daily, or weekly. Just before the start, the thing that makes every good race happens: the lobby opens exactly three minutes before the start. You roll in, the field fills up, the tension rises.

And you race against real people. Bots only step in when the field is not full – they fill the gaps, they never replace anyone. If you would rather ride in a closed circle, you can invite friends to a private race.

The circuit

Every criterium course has a set target distance and a clear lap count – so you always know how many laps still lie ahead. Barriers and course objects along the route create a real race backdrop instead of a sterile simulation.

And the courses have character: from the New York City Crit through the urban canyons to the Murten Crit around the old town, you ride circuits with a signature of their own – each with its own intro announcement as you set off.

Our tip: the Osaka Crit. A beautiful course that looks especially stunning in the evening light – race feeling and scenery in one.

Lap by lap

A criterium lives on the running order. In KOMRIDER, you get it straight into your ear: after every completed lap, the race announcer calls out the current standings. Positions are calculated live, you hear whether you are gaining or losing places, and you can time your next attack precisely.

That is the difference from a silent bar at the edge of the screen: the announcer turns numbers into a race.

Why it is harder than it looks

A criterium is deceptive. A single lap looks harmless – but you ride it twenty times, at the limit, with constant changes of pace. It is the relentless pressure that empties the legs: think you can rest, and you lose the wheel in front. Stay in it, and you experience perhaps the most intense race format there is.

The final sprint

In the end, it comes down to the line. As you roll across the finish, the finish announcement with the final standings arrives – along with a line that fits after every hard race: the line is crossed, the legs are empty, and the story is written in watts. No window that pops up in silence. A finish that feels earned.

Dare to join the field

You do not ride criteriums to play it safe. Saddle up, roll into the next lobby, and get stuck in. The lobby opens three minutes before the start – the rest is down to your legs.
